What We Treat

Here to Help You Put Your Best Feet Forward

When your body is in pain, nothing feels good. But when your feet are in pain, it can make daily life downright impossible. From arthritis and flat feet to diabetic foot care, we’re here to help you put your best foot (or feet) forward.

Conditions We Treat

Achilles Tendon Pain

The band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to the back of your lower leg, and then to your heel, is called the achilles tendon. Many people experience achilles tendon pain for a variety of reasons, especially if they tend to partake in high impact exercises, like running. One of the most common causes of Achilles tendon pain is Achilles Tendinitis.

Learn More

Serious cases of Achilles tendinitis can lead to tendon tears, which will likely require surgical repair. Other, less serious, causes of achilles tendon pain can be treated at home with our supervision. In order to determine the best course of treatment, you will need to visit us in the clinic. Give CAFAS a call today!

Ankle Sprains

A sprained ankle can occur when you roll or turn your ankle in an unnatural or awkward way. This can result in stretching or tearing of the ligaments in your ankle that hold your bones together. Symptoms of an ankle sprain include pain when putting weight on the affected foot, swelling and bruising, restricted range of motion, instability in the ankle, and a popping sensation or sound at the time of injury.

Learn More
Treating sprained ankles will vary based on the severity of the injury. In minor cases, rest, stabilization, and over the counter pain medication is the basis of treatment. In major cases, you may need physical therapy and possibly surgery. In order to understand the severity of an ankle sprain, you should make an appointment at the clinic to determine the best course of treatment.

Arthritis

Did you know, that 21.2% of adults in the U.S. have been diagnosed with a form of arthritis? Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of one or more of your joints, and can cause pain and stiffness in any joint of your body. One of the most commonly effected points on your body by arthritis is the small joints of your feet and ankles.

Learn More

Arthritis can present as stiffness and pain in your joints. When arthritis specifically effects your foot and ankle, it can be known as Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Posttraumatic Arthritis.

CAFAS treats all forms of arthritis that effects the areas below the knee. Treatment plans are personalized, so it’s best to see us in person to figure out the best treatment for you.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a fungal skin infection that is often found between the toes. This infection occurs when someone often experiences sweaty feet while wearing tight shoes. The skin infections appear on athletes the most, rightfully earning the name Athlete’s Foot.

Learn More
Symptoms of this fungal skin infection include scaly or peeling skin between the toes, itchiness, inflamed and discolored skin, burning or stinging, and blisters. If these symptoms do not improve after two weeks of self-treatment with over the counter antifungal products, or you have diabetes, you should make an appointment at the clinic as soon as possible.

Bunions

Bunions appear as a bony bump that forms around the joint at the base of your big toes. Bunions occur when the bones in the front of your foot move out of place, and cause the tip of your big toe to drift toward the smaller ones. This will force the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out.

Learn More
Wearing tight and narrow shoes may be the cause of your bunions, or they may make them worse. Generally, a bunion will cause you pain and soreness in your big toe, and eventually can go on to limit the movement of your entire foot. You should book an appointment at the clinic if you have ongoing pain, can see a visible bump on your toe joint, have decreased movement of your toe and foot, and difficulty wearing shoes.

Corn & Calluses

Corns and calluses appear as thick, hardened layers of skin that tend to develop when the skin protects itself from friction and pressure, which usually occurs because of certain shoes and activities.

Learn More

Corns and calluses generally do not require immediate treatment. By choosing to eliminate the source of friction and pressure, like certain shoes or activities, corns and calluses tend to go away on their own. However, if they appear to be changing color or shape, or continuously cause you pain, you should make an appointment at the clinic.

Flat Feet

Flat foot, or feet, is a common condition we see at CAFAS. Flat foot is when the arches on the inside of your feet flatten when you put pressure on them. Typically, people with this condition will have their feet pointed outward, and the entire sole of the foot touches the floor.

Learn More

Being flat footed can cause discomfort or pain in the heel or arch of your feet. Treatment for flat feet is not necessary unless you are in pain, so if you begin to experience discomfort or pain to the point that your activity levels are limited, you should give us a call! We’ll help you navigate treatment options to have you living a pain free life.

Foot Fatigue

Foot fatigue is a common condition that people experience after standing or walking for long periods of time. The muscles in your feet will become overly tired, and begin to cramp. In general, foot fatigue can be treated at home with massages to loosen and relax muscles. You can also wear orthotic shoe inserts to give your feet support and comfort.

Learn More
If you are experiencing consistent pain, or believe that you may be developing issues caused by foot fatigue, you should book an appointment at the clinic.

Fractures

Foot fractures may occur in one or more bones in the foot, and can be caused by sports injuries, crashes, falls, and dropped heaving objects. A fracture can range in severity from tiny cracks in the bones to breaks in multiple bones that may even puncture through the skin.

Learn More
A foot fracture may result in instant, intense pain that gets worse with activity. Your foot will also likely swell, bruise, and possibly even change shape. All of this, as well as an open fracture, or pain with walking is cause for immediate medical attention.

Fungal Nails

Fungal nails are something we see often at the clinic. A nail fungus is a common infection of the nail, and usually begins as a white, yellow, or brown spot under the tip of your nail. As the infection travels deeper into your nail, the nail will thicken and crumble at the edges. Fungal infections unfortunately can travel, and may eventually effect multiple nails.

Learn More

Thankfully, most fungal nail infections can be treeted at home! However, if you are experiencing pain, or your nail is beginning to smell, you may need medication and treatment, as nail fungus is stubborn, and likes to reappear.

Hammer Toes

When your second, third, or fourth toe bend in at the middle joints, your toes may resemble a hammer, and are bent at all times. This can be caused by wearing shoes that don’t fit well, or illnesses such as diabetes.

Learn More

Symptoms of Hammer Toes include pain when wearing shoes, stiffness in the toe(s), swelling and redness, calluses, and difficult moving the toe(s). Hammer toe can be caused from a variety of things, from trauma and disease to wearing certain kinds of shoes, like high heels.

At first, your toe(s) may still be able to be to unbend, but over time, the tendons and joints of your toe will tighten, causing it to be stuck in an uncomfortable position. Eventually, this will lead to pain caused by corns or calluses. You should reach out to us at CAFAS as soon as possible to avoid any future complications.

Heel and Arch Pain

One of the most common causes of heel pain is a condition called Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar Fasciitis occurs when the band of fascia tissue in your heel begins to experience small tears caused by tension and stress. Repeated instances of stretching and tearing the facia can irritate and inflame it.

Learn More
You should make an appointment at the clinic if you experience chronic heel pain that hinders your ability to do daily tasks and regular activities. Untreated heel and arch pain can result in issues that affect the entire foot, your knees, back, and hips.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are one of the most common conditions that we experience at CAFAS. An ingrown toenail is when the side of a toenail grows into the softer flesh of your toe. This can be painful and ugly, and sometimes ingrown toenails can result in infection.

Learn More
Usually, you can take care of an ingrown toenail at home. But if your toe becomes severely swollen, painful, and that pain and swelling begin to spread, you should contact us as soon as possible. Complications from ingrown toenails are rare, but if you are someone who suffers from poor blood flow, you are at a greater risk for complications caused by an ingrown toenail.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s Neuroma is a painful condition that will affect the ball of your feet or foot. Pain often is located between your third and fourth toes. It may even feel like you are standing on a rock that is stuck in your shoe.

Learn More
This is caused by thickening tissue around the nerves leading to your toes, which is often the result of wearing high-heels or tight shoes consistently. If you feel like a rock is stuck in your shoe (even when it’s not), you experience a burning pain in the ball of your foot, or tingling and numbness in your toes, it is likely time to make an appointment at the clinic.

Pediatric Foot Problems

At CAFAS, we treat a variety of pediatric foot problems. From flat feet and heel pain to Sever’s Disease, we’ll help your little ones stay on their feet.

Learn More

Many problems that affect children are common in adults, while others are caused by childrens rapid growth rate or deformities. If you notice your child having a hard time keeping up with others, is toe walking, or experiencing pain, you should give us a call.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition caused by damage to peripheral nerves located outside of your brain and spinal cord. This condition can cause numbness, weakness, and pain in hands and feet.

Learn More

At CAFAS, we can help you determine the best course of treatment for your experience with peripheral neuropathy. Give us a call today to book an appointment.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are small and rough growths that generally show up on the parts of your feet that bear the most pressure, like the balls and heels of your feet. They are painful and hard, and can cause you a load of discomfort.

Learn More

Plantar warts are caused by HPV, a virus that enters your body through small wounds like tiny cuts on the bottom of your feet. The warts are most likely not a serious health concern, and go away on their own.

You should give us a call if your wart does any of the following:

  • Has begun to cause you significant pain, changes shape and color, or is bleeding.
  • If you have diabetes, or have begun to have poor feeling in your foot.
  • If you have a weak immune system due to immune-suppressing drugs, or you have an immune system disorder.

Sports Injuries

Sport injuries are a common ailment we see here at CAFAS! A sport injury below the knee generally includes soft tissue injuries, ligament injuries, and fractures. These injuries are often complicated and need injury specific rehab and treatment to get you back on the field.

Learn More

A soft tissue injury can include a sprain, hamstring injury, strains, and meniscal tears. Ligament injuries can inlcude tearing your ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral ligament), or PCL (posterior cruciate ligament). Fractures include injuries such as distal femur fractures and patellar fractures, which are caused by high or direct impact to your femur.

CAFAS will need to see you in person to determine the best treatment plan for sport related injuries.

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures in feet and ankles are often caused by overuse and repetitive activity. Often, runners and athletes experience stress fractures from their repetitive and high impact lifestyles. A stress fracture will present itself as pain during weight-bearing, which often goes away while resting. You may notice swelling, tenderness, and bruising.

Learn More

In order to understand the extent of the fracture, an X-Ray will be performed. Once we can get an idea of the extent of the injury, a treatment plan can be discussed. Stress fractures can be treated with or without surgery depending on the extent of the fracture.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is a condition caused by inflammation of the fibrous cords (tendons) that attach muscles to bones. Diagnosis of tendinitis generally includes physical exams and x-rays, and treatments vary. Symptoms include pain that can be described as a dull ache, tenderness, and mild swelling.

Learn More
At CAFAS, we can help you determine the best course of treatment for your experience with tendinitis. Give us a call today to book an appointment.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes can reduce blood circulation to the lower extremeties, and can cause damage to the nerves in the feet. Those who have been diagnosed with diabetes should pay particularly close attention to their feet. With reduced blood flow comes slower healing and possibly nerve damage.

At CAFAS, we help diabetics look after their lower extreminities. Seeking the care of a podiatrist shouldn’t have to wait until there is something wrong. In fact, seeking the care of a podiatrist before anything goes wrong will significantly decrease the likelihood of diabetes related complication to your lower extremities!

Nail Fungus

Fungal nails are something we see often at the clinic. A nail fungus is a common infection of the nail, and usually begins as a white, yellow, or brown spot under the tip of your nail. As the infection travels deeper into your nail, the nail will thicken and crumble at the edges. Fungal infections unfortunately can travel, and may eventually effect multiple nails.

Calluses

Corns and calluses appear as thick, hardened layers of skin that tend to develop when the skin protects itself from friction and pressure, which usually occurs because of certain shoes and activities.

Wound Care

Wounds to the feet and ankles are treatable at the CAFAS clinic. Those with diabetes should pay special attention to any wounds, cuts, or sores on their lower extremities.
